We people of Uttarakhand (A state in India) are so much spiritual, as we are born in a place which is called (Devbhoomi) of India.
Now you guys must be thinking what does she mean by (devbhoomi)?
The land of God – Uttarakhand
Let’s just start this blog by remembering the almighty who’ve created us, the land, the sun, the stars and everything on the earth. Let’s thank him for bestowing our existence.
So talking about Uttarakhand, it is known as The Land Of God because of the pilgrimage(Yatra)of Hindu exploration places. It is famous for its Char Dham Yatras. Which are Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. These places are often known as the Char Dhams. So that’s why it is known as the dev Bhoomi of India.
We Hindus living in Uttarakhand have some pahadi(mountaineers) tales. One of which is of the goddess Nanda Devi. This story is of a princess named Nanda who was the daughter of a king. A prince of Rohilla was in love with Nanda but her father refused to give him his daughter. So the prince clashed with the king of Chamoli ( a place in Uttarakhand) and defeated him. Nanda wanted to escape from him and the prince chased her.
She wanted to save herself from the prince, so she climbed and got merged into a mountain. The mountain was 25,643 ft. Nanda(is known as an angry Goddess).Who was believed to be the incarnation of the goddess Durga.
The mountain had two peaks on it. So the larger peak is known as the “The Nanda” and the smaller one is known as “The Sunanda” which was her sister. From it was glorified as the temple of “Nanda”.
There is a yatra( pilgrimage)and a festival every year in Uttarakhand dedicated to maa Nanda and Sunanda. In which the Goddess is worshipped at every place in Uttarakhand in both Kumaon and Garhwal region. There is a big fair held in Almora(the place where I reside), Nainital , Kot (Dangoli), Ranikhet, Bhowali, Kichha and also in Milam, Martoli and Pindar valleys.
Formerly only one goddess was worshipped. From the period of the king Baj Bahadur Chand, the two goddesses “Nanda and Sunanda” were worshipped. As it was said that they together took birth in a royal family as princesses.
So in Uttarakhand Nanda Devi festival is celebrated and their life story is chimed there.
