Taboo (a misconception)

When I talk about “taboos”, trust me India has many. Even when it’s a growing country, and have mindsets that could throw away every illogical viewpoint towards everything. But still, we are all bounded with them. From a girl body hairs to her periods, from getting intimate to getting raped. We were all encircled by it and somehow affected. But what actually bothers me is why are people having an open mindset are judged as uncultured? Why are women objectified, and why do they think twice before speaking about their own body? Why marriage is a ceremony and divorce is a taboo? Why the LGBT community still don’t get the appreciation that they deserve? These issues are there in everybody’s heart, but they don’t utter a word. Cause they don’t want to be figured as an uncivil, orthodox and impolite human in this sophisticated society. The real query does we actually need these taboos or are we just used to them. We’ve been taught from a very young age that girls don’t have hairs, they don’t talk about the blood that flows from their body, but they can talk about the human coming from it. As birth is the purest thing in this world.1-PERIODSWhen I was 15, I got my 1st periods, maybe that wasn’t a big deal. Ever women go through it. But I wasn’t allowed to go even close to my home temple. As if I was cursed or something. Me being keen to know everything, I started researching about why periods are a taboo in Indian society and why everything about periods so impure. I got a few shocking articles that were actually penned down by women. Myths that abolish women from many factors of socio-cultural existence. These myths are basically originated from the Vedic period. It is said that Indra slaughtered Vitras. So it has been asserted in Veda that killing a Brahmana is a sin and guilt of that occurs every month to women. As women have taken a part of guilt to themselves. The other myth is that women cannot enter their kitchen or do chaos that they perform in their daily life without being pure again. That is after their mensuration gets over. But what I actually feel is that this myth is actually adequate than incorrect. As a woman is actually unhygienic at the time they are down. So coming in contact with the food can make the food spoiled.Women are supposed to rest while they are down as it causes backache, stomach ache and they may feel like puking and that isn’t a myth.A woman bleeding is the purest form of the goddess. There is nothing which can denote strength other than that.2-DivorcesThis taboo isn’t just related to women, but men too. When I say this word all I think about is a disastrous marriage. So why is talking about it a taboo? Women or men while tying the knot don’t think about the end. But sometimes things don’t go like our plan. Even now people are so much concerned about their family member, that they haggle with an unhappy marriage. They try to resolve things up. Even in many cases women or men commit suicide so that their family doesn’t have to suffer because of society.Divorce isn’t a very big concern. As a failed marriage can be fixed by divorce.Being apart in failed marriages is better than being a part of them.3-LGBT Community Being an India, Shiv and Shakti are the two most worshipped and adored divine. So why when they have incarnated together in a humans body a taboo?LGBT community is the most outspoken community in India. They show the courage of being unapologetic about who they actually are. Humans that don’t mind about what you assume about them. Isn’t it cool? When I see them I get goosebumps, how can people be so bold about their body.LGBT history in India is actually very interesting, as it started from the time when a son of the king refused to marry a woman, as he believed that he was a woman himself. His name was Avikshita. That was the first time when somebody actually stood for their personal choices. Shiv and Shakti are worshipped together. So when they incarnate together, welcome them. -Riya Shah
